Know the home, know the fault
The housing across Exeter ranges from medieval, Tudor and Georgian architecture to the new town development of Cranbrook to the east. With two university campuses bringing a large student population, alongside properties catering to domestic tourists, kitchens see varying levels of use. In shared student accommodation or holiday lets, electric ovens might be used by several different people who are unfamiliar with the controls. This can lead to heavy wear on moving parts like door hinges or control knobs, while older historic properties might have ovens fitted into spaces where ventilation is limited. When an electric oven fails to heat up but the fan still turns and the light comes on, the fan element has usually failed. If the appliance trips the electrics as soon as it is switched on, or when it reaches a certain temperature, an element has likely developed an earth fault. Uneven cooking or food taking too long to bake points to a faulty thermostat or a failing fan motor that cannot circulate the hot air properly. Physical damage is also an issue, particularly when doors are leaned on, which bends the hinges and prevents the door from closing tightly. A loose door seal then lets heat escape, forcing the elements to work harder. During a visit, we look at ovens that will not heat or only work on certain functions, as well as those causing power trips. We test faulty thermostats, clocks and selector switches to identify the failed component. We also inspect door hinges, seals and the inner glass for signs of heat loss or physical damage. We only work on electric cooking appliances, as we do not repair gas cookers or gas hobs.

Call 01752 922765This usually happens when the main circular fan element has failed. The oven will still turn on, the fan blade will spin, and the thermostat light might illuminate, but no heat is produced. Replacing the broken element restores the heat. We can inspect the oven to confirm if the element or the thermostat is at fault.
An oven that trips the electrics usually has a component with an earth fault. This is most commonly one of the heating elements, which can split or degrade over time, allowing the internal wiring to touch the outer casing. Faulty selector switches or damaged wiring inside the appliance can also cause the power to trip.
A door that drops or fails to shut properly usually has bent or worn hinges. This happens if heavy items are rested on the open door. When the hinges bend, the door seal cannot sit flush against the frame, allowing hot air to escape. We look at door hinges, seals and glass to resolve heat loss issues.
