Homes in Exeter

Know the home, know the fault

The housing stock in Exeter ranges from medieval, Tudor, and Georgian architecture to modern expansions like the new town of Cranbrook built a few miles east. With a large student population attending the Streatham and St Luke's university campuses, plus domestic tourists visiting the area, residential properties see varied use. In historic buildings, wine coolers might sit freestanding in dining rooms or alcoves, while newer properties tend to integrate them beneath kitchen worktops. Wherever a chiller is positioned, it requires sufficient airflow around the cabinet to operate efficiently. Without adequate ventilation, the compressor struggles to release heat, which can stop the appliance from holding the set temperature. Dual-zone models use separate compartments to store different wines, and a fault with a zone sensor, control board, or internal fan can leave one section failing while the other works normally. Condensation and misting on the glass door usually indicate a worn magnetic seal allowing ambient room air to mix with the chilled interior. Internal circulation fans prevent warm spots forming, so a stalled fan motor will result in bottles at the top of the cabinet being noticeably warmer than those at the bottom. During a visit, we look at coolers not holding temperature, investigate condensation issues, and test fan and control faults to find the underlying issue. Alongside wine chillers, we fix washing machines, washer dryers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, and electric ovens. We only repair electric and induction cooking appliances and do not work on gas hobs or any gas equipment.

Misting and condensation on the glass door or interior walls usually happen when warm room air enters the chilled cabinet. This is most likely caused by a degraded or split magnetic door seal. If the door is not closing completely, the appliance will also have to work harder to maintain its temperature.

Dual-zone coolers use separate sensors and fans to keep red and white wines at different temperatures. If one section is failing while the other remains cold, the issue is isolated to that specific compartment. It could be a faulty temperature sensor, a broken circulation fan, or a problem with the main control board.

Wine coolers rely on internal fans to circulate cold air evenly throughout the cabinet. If a fan motor fails or gets blocked, the cold air will settle at the bottom while the warmer air rises. This leaves the bottles on the upper shelves warmer than the temperature set on the control panel.
