Know the home, know the fault
Exeter is a fast-growing urban centre in Devon with a large student population across two university campuses, meaning many kitchens see heavy daily use. Properties range from modern builds in the new town development a few miles east of the boundary to historic housing featuring medieval, Tudor, and Georgian architecture. Domestic tourists also visit the area, staying in accommodation where a built-in or combination microwave is expected to function properly. In shared student houses or busy family homes, these appliances are relied upon multiple times a day. The local climate is somewhat protected from heavy rain by the nearby upland area of Dartmoor, but indoor appliances still face the wear and tear of constant operation. When a combination or built-in microwave runs but fails to heat the food, the issue is usually inside the high-voltage circuit. The magnetron, which generates the cooking energy, can fail, or a high-voltage diode might be at fault. Turntables that will not turn are another issue, typically caused by a burnt-out synchronous motor under the floor of the cavity, or sometimes just a broken drive coupler. Door latch and switch faults prevent the appliance from starting at all, as safety mechanisms cut the power if the door is not perfectly closed. Controls and displays can also become unresponsive, leaving the appliance unusable. As a domestic appliance repair business, we repair built-in and combination microwaves in your home, looking at models that run but do not heat, turntables that refuse to rotate, and unresponsive control panels. Our visits cover everything from faulty door switches to display problems. Please note that while we repair electric cooking appliances, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs, or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765A turntable that will not turn is usually caused by a failed synchronous motor located beneath the cavity floor. Sometimes, the plastic drive coupler that connects the motor to the glass tray is simply cracked or worn out. We can inspect the motor and coupler during a visit to determine why the rotation has failed.
When a microwave runs but does not heat, the fault is generally within the high-voltage components. The magnetron, which creates the microwave energy, might have failed. Alternatively, a faulty high-voltage capacitor or diode can prevent the magnetron from receiving the necessary power. We look at these internal components to resolve heating failures.
If the controls work but the appliance will not start, the issue is likely related to the door latch and switch assembly. Microwaves have multiple safety switches that cut the power if the door is not securely closed. A broken plastic latch or a faulty microswitch will prevent the appliance from operating.
