Homes in Exeter

Know the home, know the fault

The housing mix in Exeter includes everything from modern builds to historic medieval, Tudor, and Georgian designs. Because older properties were not built with modern utility rooms in mind, space is at a premium, making a combined washer dryer a practical choice for many households. A single machine handles both washing and drying without requiring the floor space of two separate units. With a population of around 124,180 people and a large student presence across two university campuses, these appliances work hard. They are also relied upon in properties catering to domestic tourists visiting the South West. Packing washing and drying components into a single cabinet creates a complex machine. When a washer dryer stops drying, clothes might remain damp or the drying cycle may never finish. This happens if the heater element fails, the thermostats trip, or the fan that circulates warm air seizes. Washing faults include the drum not filling with water, failing to drain, or refusing to spin at the end of a wash. Leaks are another issue, sometimes tracing back to a degraded door seal or a blocked condenser chamber. Error codes on the digital display panel point towards control board faults, motor issues, or faulty temperature sensors. We travel up to repair appliances in homes across the area, including places like Topsham. During a visit, we look at the specific symptoms your machine is showing. That means inspecting the drain pump for blockages, testing the drying heater for electrical continuity, or checking the door seal for tears and leaks. Alongside washer dryers, we repair washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, refrigeration, and electric cooking appliances, though we do not work on gas cookers or any gas equipment.

A washer dryer relies on a heating element and a fan to circulate warm air through the drum. If the element fails or the fan motor seizes, the machine will tumble the clothes without actually heating them. A blocked condenser chamber can also prevent moisture from being extracted during the drying phase.

The most direct cause of a draining fault is a blockage in the pump filter, which catches coins, lint, and small items before they reach the impeller. If the filter is clear, the drain pump itself might have failed mechanically or electrically, or there could be an obstruction in the waste hose.

Front leaks usually originate from the rubber door seal. Over time, the seal can degrade, tear, or become distorted by trapped clothing, allowing water to escape down the front of the cabinet. A build-up of hair or debris on the glass door can also break the watertight seal during a wash.
