Know the home, know the fault
A fast-growing urban centre with a large student population across two university campuses means there is a high demand for reliable food storage. Properties range from historic medieval, Tudor and Georgian designs to modern developments built a few miles east of the city boundary. In shared student houses or properties catering to domestic tourists, upright and chest freezers work hard. Multiple people opening the door throughout the day lets warm air inside, which forces the compressor to run longer to maintain the correct internal temperature. When warm air enters the cabinet, moisture condenses and freezes on the evaporator coils. Over time, this creates heavy ice build-up that can stop drawers from sliding properly and block the internal air vents. If the defrost heater, thermostat or timer fails, the ice continues to grow until the appliance struggles to stay cold enough. A damaged door seal will also let room air seep in constantly, leading to temperature alarms sounding and the motor running without a break. Chest models can struggle if the ambient temperature drops too low, confusing the thermostat, while upright models in a kitchen might overheat if dust clogs the condenser coils at the back. When visiting homes in places like Topsham, we repair upright and chest freezers in your home that are not freezing or are icing up. Our fault finding covers units that are not cold enough, heavy ice build-up and drawers that stick. We also investigate temperature alarms, constant running and door seal faults. We repair electric domestic appliances only and do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas equipment.

Call 01752 922765Thick ice usually forms when warm air enters the cabinet and condenses on the cold evaporator coils. A torn or loose door seal is a prime suspect for letting air seep in. Alternatively, the automatic defrost system, which includes a heater and a timer, might have failed and stopped melting the daily frost.
A freezer motor runs continuously if it cannot reach the set temperature. This happens when the condenser coils are covered in dust, restricting heat transfer, or if the door seal is damaged. A faulty thermostat might also fail to signal the compressor to switch off once the cabinet is cold enough.
The alarm sounds when the internal temperature rises above a safe level for food storage. This can happen if the door was left slightly open, if heavy ice is blocking the air circulation vents, or if the compressor has developed a fault and is no longer pumping refrigerant through the system.
