Know the home, know the fault
Properties in Saltash facing the city of Plymouth over the River Tamar range from historic seventeenth century buildings, such as Burrell House, to much newer housing. The area grew during the nineteen nineties with the addition of the Latchbrook estate, followed by the later Pillmere development. Older properties exist too, including grade two listed cottages like the one found on Culver Road. In historic homes, kitchens might have been retrofitted into spaces not originally designed for modern ventilation, meaning extractor hoods sometimes rely on recirculation rather than external venting. Newer houses are usually built with external extraction routes already in place. Whether an extractor vents outside or recirculates air, it needs to clear steam effectively. When an extractor hood loses suction, the kitchen quickly fills with steam and cooking odours. This drop in performance can happen if the motor fails to run at full speed or if the fan blades become heavy with accumulated grease. Motors can also become noisy or start vibrating, which points to worn bearings or an unbalanced fan impeller. Another issue is lighting failure. If replacing the bulbs does not restore the lights, the fault might lie within the switch mechanism or the internal control board. Switches on these appliances are exposed to rising moisture and grease, which can eventually cause the electrical contacts to fail. During a visit, we look at fans that will not run or have lost suction, noisy or vibrating motors, and lights or switches that have failed. Please note that while we repair electric cooking appliances, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765A vibrating or excessively noisy extractor fan usually points to a problem with the motor or the impeller. The motor bearings can wear out over time, creating a grinding sound. Alternatively, a build-up of grease on the fan blades can unbalance the impeller, causing the whole unit to shake when switched on.
If changing the bulbs has not solved the problem, the issue is likely electrical. The light switch contacts can fail due to exposure to cooking steam and grease. Sometimes, the internal control board or the light fitting itself has developed a fault. We can inspect the wiring and switches to locate the exact electrical failure.
Poor suction happens when the airflow is restricted or the motor is failing. Saturated grease filters or blocked charcoal recirculation filters will stop air from passing through the hood. If the filters are clean, the motor might be running too slowly to pull the air, or the external venting duct could be obstructed.
