Know the home, know the fault
The settlement grew rapidly throughout the 1980s and 1990s alongside the Devon Expressway, and the historic paper mill buildings are currently being converted into new homes and shops. Kitchen layouts across these different property styles dictate how an extractor hood is installed. Some units extract air directly outside through an external wall, while others simply recirculate filtered air back into the room to manage cooking steam. Extractor hoods rely on a motor to draw cooking steam and odours away from the hob. When a fan will not run or has lost suction, the motor might have failed or the internal pathways could be blocked by a buildup of cooking residue. Noisy or vibrating motors usually point to worn bearings or an impeller fan that has become unbalanced over time. Lights and switches that have failed are another issue, sometimes caused by a blown bulb but occasionally pointing to a faulty control board, a blown fuse, or damaged wiring inside the main unit casing. We also travel out to surrounding places like Ugborough to look at faulty appliances. Once at the property, we look at fans that will not run or have lost suction, noisy or vibrating motors, and lights and switches that have failed. We repair electric cooking appliances rather than gas.

Call 01752 922765A vibrating noise usually indicates an issue with the motor or the fan impeller. Over time, grease and dirt can build up on the fan blades, causing them to become unbalanced and vibrate when spinning. Alternatively, the motor bearings might be worn out. We look at noisy or vibrating motors to identify the exact fault.
If changing the bulbs does not resolve the issue, the fault might lie within the internal wiring or the main control switch. Sometimes the light switch mechanism fails, or a component on the circuit board burns out. We look at lights and switches that have failed to determine which part needs replacing.
Poor suction happens when the airflow is restricted. This is heavily influenced by the condition of the filters. If the metal mesh or carbon filters become saturated with cooking grease, air cannot pass through them.
