Know the home, know the fault

Working in domestic appliance repair means visiting a wide variety of properties. In the centre, Victorian buildings sit alongside the historic paper mill which is being converted into homes and shops. A fridge operates continuously in the background of any kitchen, whether it is a freestanding unit in a central terraced property or an integrated model in a newer suburban build. When a fridge develops a fault, the symptoms are usually clear. A unit that feels too warm or fails to cool evenly might have a failing thermostat or a degraded door seal letting ambient air inside. If water starts pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor, the internal drain hole is likely blocked by debris. Ice building up on the back wall points to a defrost issue or a sealed system problem. You might also notice the compressor running constantly, clicking sounds, or new mechanical noises, which indicate the motor is struggling to maintain the set temperature. We also travel out to surrounding places like Ugborough. During a home visit, we look at fridges that are warm, not cooling evenly, or leaking water. We check for ice building up on the back wall, investigate constant running or clicking noises, and inspect faulty lights, thermostats and door seals. We repair electric appliances only, as we do not work on gas cookers or any gas equipment.

Water collecting under the salad crisper drawers is usually caused by a blocked defrost drain. When condensation forms on the back wall, it runs down into a small gutter and through a drain hole. If crumbs or food packaging block this hole, the water overflows into the cabinet and eventually leaks onto the floor.

A fridge motor will run continuously if it cannot reach the target temperature. This happens if the door seal is split, allowing warm air to enter the cabinet. It can also be caused by a faulty thermostat failing to signal the compressor to switch off, or a build-up of thick ice insulating the internal sensors.

Ice accumulation on the rear internal wall indicates that the appliance is struggling to manage its cooling cycle. A damaged door gasket letting in humid room air is a primary cause. Alternatively, the internal thermostat might be defective, causing the appliance to overcool and freeze the natural condensation before it has a chance to drain away.
