Know the home, know the fault

Properties in this part of Devon range from Victorian buildings in the centre to semi-detached houses built on steep roads and detached homes further out. The late twentieth century saw rapid expansion alongside the expressway, and today, historic paper mill buildings are being converted into modern residential homes and retail spaces. The wider area is surrounded by river valleys, working farmland, and dense woodland. In older terraces or newly converted apartments where utility space is limited, a washer dryer is a practical choice, combining two large appliances into a single footprint. These combination machines have complex internal layouts, packing both washing and drying components into one cabinet. When a drying cycle fails to produce heat, leaves clothes damp, or runs continuously without finishing, the issue might be a blocked condenser chamber, a faulty heater element, or a tripped thermostat. Washing faults can include the drum failing to spin, water not draining away, or the machine refusing to fill at the start of a programme. Leaks are another issue, sometimes originating from a split door seal or a degraded internal hose. Control faults or error codes on the display indicate communication problems between the main board and the various sensors inside the machine. Whether a machine is located near the town centre or out towards Harford, we repair appliances directly in the home. During a visit, we inspect the appliance to find the cause of the problem. We look at washing components like drain pumps and inlet valves, as well as drying systems, door seals, and electronic control boards. We also repair tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, microwaves, and electric ovens, though we do not work on gas appliances.

A washer dryer that leaves clothes damp usually has a fault in the drying circuit. The condenser chamber might be blocked with lint, preventing moisture from being extracted. Alternatively, the heater element or a thermostat could have failed, meaning no heat is generated. We inspect these internal components to find the fault.

When a machine fails to drain, the cycle will pause and the door will remain locked. This is typically caused by a blockage in the drain pump filter or the waste hose. If the pathways are clear, the drain pump itself might have an electrical fault or a damaged impeller.

Leaks from the front of the appliance are usually related to the rubber door seal. Over time, the seal can degrade, tear, or become pierced by sharp objects left in pockets. Water can also escape if the door hinge drops, preventing the glass bowl from making a tight connection with the rubber gasket.
