Know the home, know the fault
The nineteen nineties saw significant expansion with the Latchbrook estate, followed by the later Pillmere development. In older homes, a chest freezer might be kept in an unheated outbuilding or garage, while newer builds tend to integrate upright models into the kitchen layout. Wherever a freezer is situated, it requires adequate airflow around the condenser coils to dissipate heat efficiently. If a unit is pushed too tightly against a wall, the compressor has to work harder to maintain the internal temperature. When a freezer fails to stay cold enough, a temperature alarm will sound and the motor may run constantly. Heavy ice build-up is a typical issue that leaves drawers sticking and reduces storage space. This icing up happens when warm air enters the cabinet, which points to a torn or flattened door seal failing to keep the cold air inside. Another reason for a unit not freezing properly is a faulty defrost heater or a blocked drain hole, causing ice to smother the evaporator coils. A failing thermostat can also prevent the compressor from turning on when the internal temperature rises. During a visit, we look at chest and upright freezers that are icing up or not freezing. We check for door seal faults, test the defrost components, and investigate temperature alarms and constant running. Please note that while we fix electric cooking appliances, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs, or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765Heavy ice build-up usually means warm air is getting into the cabinet. This happens if the door seal is split, flattened, or simply not making full contact with the frame. Ice can also form if the defrost heater fails or the drain hole becomes blocked, leaving drawers sticking and reducing your storage space.
A temperature alarm sounds when the internal cabinet is not cold enough to keep food frozen safely. The compressor motor will run constantly to try and lower the temperature. This points to a failing thermostat, a faulty start relay, or a problem with the compressor itself failing to circulate the refrigerant properly.
If the motor runs constantly but the appliance is not freezing, the condenser coils at the back might be covered in dust, restricting heat dissipation. Alternatively, the evaporator fan could be faulty, preventing cold air from circulating inside. A failing compressor or a refrigerant issue will also stop the unit from reaching the correct temperature.
