Know the home, know the fault
Houses in this ancient wool settlement sit in the Teign Valley close to the edge of Dartmoor. In older properties with uneven floors, an upright freezer must be levelled correctly using its adjustable feet. If the cabinet leans forward or to one side, the heavy door can pull on the hinges, eventually distorting the seal and letting warm room air seep inside. Chest freezers kept in outbuildings or utility rooms need to operate within the ambient temperature range specified by the manufacturer, or the compressor may struggle to keep the interior cold enough. When warm air gets past a damaged door seal, the moisture it carries turns into heavy ice build-up on the internal evaporator coils. This ice restricts airflow, causing drawers to stick and forcing the compressor into constant running as it tries to bring the temperature down. You might notice the temperature alarm sounding if the interior is not cold enough to keep food frozen. Other faults include a failed defrost heater or a broken fan motor, both of which stop the appliance from managing its own frost levels. A blocked defrost drain can also cause water to pool at the bottom of the cabinet and freeze solid. When we arrive to repair an upright or chest freezer, we look at the door seals, hinges, thermostats and defrost components. Whether you live near Castle Dyke or further out, we diagnose why the appliance is icing up or failing to freeze. As a domestic appliance repair business, we fix washing machines, dishwashers, electric ovens and cooling appliances, though we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765A freezer compressor runs constantly when it cannot reach the set temperature. This happens if the door seal is torn, letting warm air inside, or if a thick layer of ice is insulating the cooling coils. A faulty thermostat or a failing compressor relay can also cause continuous running without producing enough cold air.
Heavy ice build-up is usually caused by warm, moist air entering the cabinet. A damaged door seal or a door left slightly ajar will create this problem rapidly. In frost-free models, a broken defrost heater, a faulty defrost timer or a blocked drain hole will stop the appliance from clearing its own ice automatically.
The temperature alarm activates when the interior is not cold enough to keep food frozen. This can happen if a large amount of unfrozen food has just been added, or if the door was left open. If the light stays on, it points to a mechanical failure like a broken fan motor or a thermostat fault.
