Know the home, know the fault

Chudleigh is an ancient wool settlement that sits in the Teign Valley close to the edge of Dartmoor, positioned between Exeter and Newton Abbot. Kitchen layouts in these properties dictate the type of cooking appliances installed, with available space determining whether a standard single built-in electric oven or a larger double unit is fitted. When an electric oven stops working as it should, the symptoms are usually clear. A fan oven that blows cold air while the indicator light remains on points to a failed heating element. If food cooks unevenly or burns on one side, the fan motor might be struggling to circulate air, or the thermostat could be reading the internal temperature incorrectly. Heat escaping into the kitchen is another issue, caused by worn door seals or dropped hinges that stop the door from closing flush. This forces the appliance to run constantly to maintain temperature. We only repair electric models and do not work on gas cookers or gas hobs. We look at ovens that trip the electrics, fail to heat on some functions, or have faulty clocks and controls preventing operation. We also replace damaged door glass and worn hinges.

This happens when an electrical component develops a fault and leaks current to earth. The main heating element is a prime suspect, as the internal insulation degrades and expands when hot, touching the outer casing. Faulty fan motors, damaged wiring or a failing thermostat can also cause the electrics to trip.

A fan running with no heat means the circular element surrounding the fan blade has failed. The appliance still turns on, the thermostat clicks, and the air circulates, but the broken element cannot generate warmth. We replace blown elements to restore normal cooking temperatures. We do not repair gas appliances.

Yes, a door that hangs open or drops on one side usually has worn or bent hinges. The hinge receivers inside the appliance cavity can also fail. We look at door hinges, seals and glass, replacing the faulty parts so the door shuts flush and keeps the heat inside.
