Know the home, know the fault

This ancient wool town is situated in the Teign Valley, close to the edge of Dartmoor and near to Haldon Forest. In these older houses, kitchens might have been updated to accommodate large freestanding appliances like electric range cookers. These wide units provide multiple cooking zones, combining a hob with main and secondary ovens, which is useful for households needing extra capacity. When a large electric range cooker develops a fault, it can disrupt meal preparation. A main or secondary oven that stops heating usually points to a failed fan element or a faulty thermostat. If the appliance trips the electrics when turned on, the cause might be degraded insulation on an element or a wiring fault within the unit itself. Grill and hob faults also occur, where a ceramic or induction zone fails to reach temperature, or a dual-circuit grill element only partially heats up. Control knobs, selector switches and cooling fans take a lot of wear over time and can eventually require replacement to restore full function. During a visit, we look at the controls, fans and thermostats to identify why an oven is not heating or a hob is unresponsive. We dismantle the necessary panels to test internal components and trace electrical faults that cause the main trip switch to activate. Cooking appliance repairs are electric and induction only. We do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

This happens when an electrical component develops a fault to earth. The most likely cause is a heating element in the main oven, secondary oven or grill where the internal insulation has broken down. It can also be caused by a faulty selector switch, damaged wiring or moisture getting into the internal connections.

If the fan is spinning and the indicator lights are on but there is no heat, the circular fan element surrounding the fan motor has likely failed. The element is responsible for heating the air before it is circulated around the cavity. Replacing the element restores the heating function.

Yes, we repair electric and induction hobs that are built into range cookers. Induction zones can fail due to blown inverter boards, faulty touch controls or damaged cooling fans underneath the glass. We dismantle the hob section to test the electronic components and replace the parts causing the cooking zone to fail.
