Know the home, know the fault

Properties around the centre of Kingsbridge retain many buildings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, while the wider area serves as a popular tourist destination. In holiday accommodation or busy family homes with children attending the large local secondary school, built-in and combination microwaves see heavy daily use. A combination microwave acts as a second oven for many households, meaning a breakdown disrupts meal preparation. When a built-in unit stops working, it cannot simply be swapped out like a freestanding model, requiring a repair in place. When a microwave runs but fails to heat food, the fault usually lies within the high-voltage circuit. A failed magnetron, diode or capacitor will stop the appliance generating microwaves, even though the internal lights and cooling fan still operate. Turntables that refuse to rotate are another issue, typically caused by a faulty synchronous motor beneath the cavity floor or a broken drive coupling. Door latches and microswitches also wear out over time. If the door hooks do not engage the switches correctly, the control board will not allow the unit to start. On combination models, the heating elements or convection fans can fail independently of the microwave function. Whether a property is near the estuary or further out towards Chillington, we repair built-in and combination microwaves directly in the kitchen. We check units that will not heat, test turntables that have stopped moving, and inspect door switches and control displays. Our focus is strictly on electric cooking appliances, so we do not work on gas equipment. We also travel to nearby places like Salcombe, Modbury and Totnes to fix domestic appliances.

A microwave that sounds like it is working but produces no heat usually has a fault in the high-voltage circuit. The magnetron, which generates the microwave energy, may have failed. Alternatively, a faulty high-voltage diode or capacitor can prevent the magnetron from receiving the power it needs to operate.

The glass plate is turned by a small synchronous motor located under the floor of the microwave cavity. If this motor burns out, the turntable will not move. The plastic drive coupling that connects the motor to the glass tray or roller ring can also crack or strip over time.

Microwaves have multiple safety microswitches hidden behind the front panel that monitor the door latches. If the door hooks are damaged or a switch fails, the control board registers the door as open. The appliance will not start any cooking cycle until all switches confirm the door is securely closed.
