Homes in Plymouth

Know the home, know the fault

The housing across our home base ranges from post-war low-density suburbia and prefabricated properties built rapidly during the nineteen fifties, to major new settlements developing in the eastern corridor. With a large student presence and several active military regiments based locally, many properties see frequent changes in occupancy. When a house is shared or sees a high turnover of tenants, upright and chest freezers can take a bit of punishment. Doors might be left ajar, or the appliance gets overfilled with bulk food purchases, which puts extra strain on the compressor and the internal cooling system. When an upright or chest freezer stops working properly, the symptoms are usually quite obvious. Heavy ice build-up is a physical issue that causes drawers to stick and reduces your available storage space. This happens when warm air enters the cabinet, perhaps because a door seal has split or the hinges have dropped out of alignment. If the appliance is running constantly or triggering a temperature alarm, the internal thermostat might be failing to read the cold correctly, or the defrost heater could be faulty. A freezer that is not cold enough will struggle to preserve food, forcing the compressor to work continuously as it tries to reach the set temperature. When we arrive, we look at the symptoms your freezer is showing. We check for door seal faults, investigate temperature alarms, and test the internal components to see why the cabinet is not cold enough or why heavy ice is forming. We carry out repairs directly in your home.

Thick ice forms when warm, moist air enters the freezer cabinet and freezes on the internal walls. This is usually caused by a damaged door seal or a door that has been left slightly ajar. In frost-free models, a failure in the defrost heater or the defrost timer will also allow heavy ice to accumulate, which eventually causes the drawers to stick.

A temperature alarm sounds when the internal cabinet becomes too warm to store food safely. This happens if the compressor fails to run, the thermostat stops reading the temperature correctly, or there is a loss of refrigerant. It can also occur if the appliance has just been loaded with a large amount of unfrozen food, temporarily raising the internal temperature.

A freezer will run constantly if it is struggling to reach its set temperature. A split door seal letting in warm air is a primary culprit. Alternatively, the thermostat might be faulty, failing to signal the compressor to turn off. A build-up of dust on the condenser coils at the back of the appliance can also reduce efficiency, forcing continuous operation.
