Homes in Plymouth

Know the home, know the fault

The housing across this coastal area between the rivers Plym and Tamar includes many prefabricated properties built rapidly during the nineteen fifties. Beyond those, widespread low density suburban housing replaced older structures after the Second World War, while major new settlements are developing to the east at Langage and Sherford. The local university creates a large student presence, and the area is home to active military regiments alongside the largest operational naval base in Western Europe. In shared student houses or busy family homes, fridge freezers work continuously. Integrated models sit behind cabinet doors, while freestanding and larger American-style units require adequate ventilation space around the condenser coils to release heat efficiently. When a fridge freezer stops working properly, the symptoms depend on the broken component. A fridge might feel warm while the freezer still works, which happens if the fan fails to circulate cold air between the compartments or if a defrost heater breaks, causing ice to block the air channels. Frost and ice build-up inside the cabinet points to a damaged door seal letting in humid room air, or a faulty defrost timer. Water leaks inside the fridge or onto the floor usually originate from a blocked defrost drain tube. Noisy running can indicate a failing compressor or a worn evaporator fan motor, while faulty controls might stop the appliance from cooling entirely. Because Plymouth is our home base, travelling to repair visits across the city and nearby towns like Torpoint takes a straightforward drive. When looking at a faulty fridge freezer, we check the thermostat, inspect the compressor relays, and test the defrost system components. We work on both freestanding and integrated appliances, tracing electrical faults and replacing broken mechanical parts. Our domestic appliance repair service covers electric cooking equipment, washing machines, tumble dryers, and dishwashers, though we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

Ice builds up when the automatic defrost cycle fails to operate correctly. This happens if the defrost heater element burns out, the defrost timer stops advancing, or the thermostat breaks. A damaged door seal can also allow warm room air inside, which condenses and freezes over the evaporator coils faster than the system can melt it away.

Most fridge freezers generate all their cold air in the freezer section and use a fan to push a portion of it up into the fridge. If the evaporator fan motor fails, or if a broken defrost system allows ice to block the air damper between the two compartments, the fridge will become warm while the freezer remains frozen.

Water pooling under the salad crisper drawers usually means the defrost drain tube is blocked. During the normal defrost cycle, condensation drips down the back wall of the fridge and exits through a small hole. If food particles or dust clog this drain, the water has nowhere to go and overflows onto the interior floor.
