Know the home, know the fault
Properties situated on the south coast between the rivers Plym and Tamar vary from nineteen fifties prefabricated houses to low density suburban housing built after the Second World War. A fridge in a shared student house might see the door opened and closed constantly throughout the day, putting extra strain on the hinges and the door seal. In dispersed suburban properties, a fridge freezer might be kept in an unheated utility space, which can affect how the thermostat reads the ambient temperature and controls the cooling cycle. When a fridge stops cooling evenly, the issue might be a faulty thermostat or a blocked air damper restricting the flow of cold air. Ice building up on the back wall usually points to a failing defrost heater or a blocked drain hole, which can also lead to water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor. If the appliance is running constantly or making new clicking noises, the compressor or the start relay might be struggling to operate correctly. A torn door seal will let warm air enter the cabinet, forcing the motor to work harder to maintain the correct internal temperature. During a visit, we look at fridges that are too warm, too cold, noisy or leaking. The inspection covers faulty lights, thermostats, door seals and the reasons behind constant running or clicking sounds. While we repair many electric domestic appliances, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765Water pooling inside the cabinet is usually caused by a blocked defrost drain. When the fridge goes through a defrost cycle, the melted water is supposed to flow down a small hole at the back and into a drip tray above the compressor. If crumbs or food packaging block this hole, the water overflows into the bottom of the fridge.
A fridge motor running without a break means the appliance is struggling to reach its set temperature. This might happen if the door seal is torn, allowing warm air inside. Clicking noises often point to a faulty start relay trying and failing to engage the compressor, or the compressor itself overheating and tripping its overload protector.
Ice building up on the rear wall of the fridge compartment suggests a problem with the defrost system or the thermostat. If the thermostat fails to turn the cooling cycle off, the compressor runs continuously and freezes the condensation on the back wall. A damaged door seal can also let in humid air, which quickly turns to frost and ice.
