Homes in Looe
Know the home, know the fault
The housing stock along this steep river valley ranges from older fishermen's properties, constructed with living quarters upstairs and storage below, to modern houses on the high ground to the north. Because the local economy relies heavily on tourism, a large portion of the area consists of holiday homes, guest houses and hotels. Guests in holiday lets rely on these appliances for self-catering, while permanent residents use them daily for defrosting and reheating. When a microwave runs but does not heat the food, the issue is usually found within the high-voltage circuit. A faulty magnetron, a blown high-voltage diode or a failed capacitor will stop the appliance from generating microwaves, even though the lights and fan still operate. Another issue is a turntable that will not turn, resulting in uneven cooking. This is typically caused by a worn synchronous motor under the cavity floor or a broken glass tray coupling. Door latch and switch faults also prevent the unit from starting, as the safety interlocks must engage fully before the control board allows power to the heating components. We visit homes across the area, including properties on the Hannafore estate, to repair built-in and combination microwaves in the kitchen. During a visit, we look at microwaves that run but do not heat, turntables that will not turn, door latch and switch faults, and unresponsive controls and displays. All Appliance Care repairs domestic appliances in the customer's home. We work on electric appliances only and do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765When a microwave sounds like it is running normally but the food remains cold, the fault is usually in the high-voltage components. A failed magnetron, a blown high-voltage diode or a faulty capacitor will prevent the appliance from generating heat. We inspect these internal parts to find the exact component that has failed.
A turntable that will not turn is generally caused by a faulty synchronous motor located underneath the cavity floor. It can also happen if the glass tray coupling is broken or if the roller ring is jammed. Without rotation, the microwaves do not distribute evenly, leading to hot and cold spots in your food.
If the display works but the start button does nothing, the door latch or safety switches might be at fault. Microwaves have multiple interlock switches that must engage before the control board allows the heating cycle to begin. Alternatively, the membrane keypad itself or the main control board may have developed an electrical fault.
