Know the home, know the fault
Properties facing the city over the River Tamar range from seventeenth century buildings like Burrell House to the modern additions of Pillmere. A domestic fridge operates continuously in the background of these varied houses. Whether it sits in a historic grade two listed cottage on Culver Road or a newer property on the Latchbrook estate, the appliance relies on steady airflow around its exterior to dissipate the heat it extracts from the cabinet. When ventilation is restricted by surrounding cupboards or walls, the compressor has to run for longer periods to maintain the set temperature. A fridge that runs constantly or makes clicking noises indicates a struggle with its cooling cycle. The compressor might be overheating, or a faulty thermostat is failing to signal that the target temperature has been reached. Inside the cabinet, uneven cooling or a back wall covered in ice points to a breakdown in the defrost system or a damaged door seal letting ambient air enter. When warm air meets the cold interior surfaces, condensation forms. If the internal drain hole becomes blocked with food debris, this moisture has nowhere to go, resulting in water pooling under the salad crispers or leaking out onto the floor. When visiting a home near St Stephens, we examine the appliance to find the cause of the issue. We look at fridges that are warm or not cooling evenly, investigate water pooling inside or on the floor, and check for ice building up on the back wall. The assessment also covers constant running, clicking or new noises, alongside testing for faulty lights, thermostats and door seals.

When the small drain hole at the back of the interior becomes blocked with food particles or packaging debris, moisture overflows into the base. Clearing this blockage allows the water to flow down to the evaporation tray above the compressor.
Ice builds up when warm air continuously enters the cabinet or the internal defrost system fails. A split or flattened door seal allows ambient room air to mix with the cold interior, creating excessive frost. Alternatively, a faulty defrost heater or sensor prevents the appliance from melting away normal frost accumulations during its regular cycle.
A compressor runs continuously when the appliance struggles to reach its target temperature. This happens if the condenser coils at the back are heavily coated in dust, restricting heat dissipation. It also occurs if a faulty thermostat fails to register the correct internal temperature, forcing the motor to keep working without a break.
