Know the home, know the fault

Properties facing Plymouth over the River Tamar range from seventeenth century buildings like Burrell House to modern developments. The nineteen nineties saw significant expansion with the Latchbrook estate, followed by further house building at Pillmere. Older cottages, such as those found on Culver Road, might have limited utility space, meaning a tumble dryer is sometimes squeezed into a tight corner or an outbuilding. In contrast, newer properties usually have dedicated utility rooms where ventilation for vented dryers or ambient airflow for condenser models is easier to manage. Wherever a dryer is situated, it requires adequate room to draw in air for the drying process. A dryer that runs but does not heat usually has a tripped thermostat or a failed heating element. When a machine is pushed hard against a wall in a small space, the airflow becomes restricted, causing the internal temperature to rise until the safety thermostats cut the power to the heater. If the drum will not turn but you can hear the motor running, the drive belt has likely snapped. Condenser and water container faults also occur, particularly if the condenser unit becomes blocked with lint, preventing moisture from being extracted from the load. A dryer that stops mid-cycle might be struggling with a faulty moisture sensor, while noisy running points to worn support rollers or bearings. We visit properties across the area, including places like St Stephens, to repair domestic appliances. During a visit, we look at dryers that will not start, machines that fail to finish a cycle, and units with drum or heating issues. We repair washing machines, washer dryers, tumble dryers, dishwashers, refrigeration units, and electric cooking appliances, though we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

This usually means the heating element has failed or a safety thermostat has tripped. Thermostats cut the power to the heater if the internal temperature gets too high, which happens when lint blocks the filters or the airflow is restricted. We can test these components and replace the faulty parts.

If you can hear the motor running but the drum remains still, the drive belt has almost certainly snapped. Belts wear down over time and eventually break under the strain of a heavy load of wet washing. Replacing the belt requires dismantling the machine to route it around the drum.

A condenser dryer extracts moisture by passing warm air over a cool heat exchanger. If the condenser unit at the base of the machine is clogged with wet lint, the heat exchange process fails. The moisture sensor inside the drum might also be coated in fabric softener, giving false readings.
