Know the home, know the fault

The properties in Looe along the steep-sided river valley leading down to the sandy beach vary greatly. On the high ground to the north, there are many modern houses, while older fishermen's homes were constructed with living quarters upstairs and a ground-level storage area for boats and tools. The local economy relies heavily on tourism, with much of the town given over to guest houses, hotels and holiday homes. In busy rental environments, electric and induction hobs experience heavy use from different visitors, which can lead to wear on touch controls and heating zones. When an electric or induction hob develops a fault, the symptoms depend on the underlying technology. On a standard ceramic hob, a heating ring that fails to glow red usually points to a broken element or a faulty energy regulator. Induction models operate differently, using magnetic coils to heat the pan directly. If an induction zone does not heat, the issue might lie with the coil itself or the inverter board supplying the power. Across both types, touch controls that do not respond or units that switch off unexpectedly are typical signs of a failing control module or a disrupted power supply. Sometimes, a hob will trip the electrics entirely, which happens when moisture reaches the internal wiring or a component shorts out. During a visit, we look at zones or rings that will not heat, touch controls that do not respond, error codes and hobs that switch off, and units that trip the electrics. We focus entirely on electric and induction cooking appliances, as we do not work on gas hobs or any gas equipment.

Error codes on an induction hob indicate that the internal diagnostics have detected a fault. This could be a communication failure between the touch control board and the main power module, or an overheating issue caused by a blocked cooling fan. We look at error codes to trace the electrical fault.

When a specific zone on a ceramic hob will not heat, the heating element under the glass has usually failed. Alternatively, the energy regulator that controls the power to that ring might be broken, preventing electricity from reaching the element. We test the internal wiring and components to find the broken circuit.

A hob that trips the electrics usually has a dead short somewhere in the system. This happens if liquid boils over and seeps into the internal wiring, or if the insulation around a heating element degrades over time. We inspect hobs that trip the electrics to locate the short circuit and replace damaged parts.
