Homes in Looe

Know the home, know the fault

Properties along the steep-sided river valley and harbour include ancient fishermen's houses where living quarters were built upstairs above ground-level storage areas. In these older layouts, getting a replacement fridge up the stairs can be difficult, making a repair an appealing option when a fault develops. The local economy in Looe is heavily focused on tourism, meaning a large proportion of properties operate as holiday homes, guest houses and hotels. In a busy holiday let, a fridge works hard to keep groceries cool for changing groups of guests, while modern houses on the elevated land to the north might have larger family appliances running constantly. A fridge that is struggling to maintain the correct temperature might have a faulty thermostat or a failing compressor. If the appliance feels warm or is not cooling evenly, the door seals could be split, allowing cold air to escape and forcing the motor to run constantly. Water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor points to a blocked defrost drain tube. When ice builds up heavily on the back wall, it restricts airflow and can cause the internal temperature to rise. You might also notice loud clicking noises or a constant hum if the start relay is failing. When visiting a property in areas like Shutta, we examine the appliance in your home to find the cause of the problem. We look at fridges that are too warm, too cold, noisy or leaking. Our checks cover faulty lights, broken thermostats, worn door seals and blocked drains. We repair domestic appliances, though we do not work on gas appliances.

Water pooling under the salad crisper drawers points to a blocked defrost drain. Condensation runs down the back wall of the fridge and is supposed to exit through a small hole. If food particles or debris block this drain, the water has nowhere to go and spills into the bottom of the cabinet.

A fridge motor runs continuously when it struggles to reach the set temperature. This can happen if the door seals are split, letting cold air escape into the kitchen. It might also be caused by a thick build-up of ice on the back wall acting as insulation, or a failing thermostat that cannot detect the temperature correctly.

Food freezing inside the fridge cabinet points to a temperature control issue. The thermostat might be faulty, telling the compressor to keep cooling even when the correct temperature is reached. Alternatively, the temperature sensor could be damaged, or items might be pushed too close to the back wall where the cooling plate is located.
